Types of polished concrete

Polished concrete doesn’t have to be plain concrete polished to a matt, satin or high gloss look. The concrete can be coloured or have aggregate added for different effects. While it will cost more, patterns can be placed in the concrete and in some cases, the concrete will have lines cut into it. However, even plain concrete can look stunning when polished, with swirls and multiple shades of grey becoming apparent.

Aggregate adds colour to a polished concrete floor. Different types of aggregate will have different colours or a mixture of colours can create a stunning looking floor. The concrete can be coloured too, to create a floor that’s more uniform in appearance.

While it is more expensive, patterns can be added to polished concrete floors. The complexity of the pattern will determine the price. A simple pattern in a polished concrete floor costs less than a more complex pattern, but expert concreters can create almost any pattern by using different colours of concrete or using aggregate on one area and coloured concrete or another colour of aggregate on another area.

Polished concrete can have almost any colour or look you want. Even grind and seal concrete will last 15 to 30 years in the average space, but will have to be refinished occasionally. Honed concrete will last longer, but is more expensive, while mechanically polished concrete will last a long time. It’s often used on commercial floors because of the amount of foot traffic and doesn’t need repolishing. Although mechanically polished concrete floors cost more, the results can be well worth it.
